Some Republicans Rethinking Donor Disclosure to Social-Welfare Groups

File this one in the “this should be interesting” column.

According to Bloomberg this morning, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R – Alaska) and Representative Walter Jones (R – North Carolina) are working with Democrats on possible legislation that would change disclosure rules from closed to open for large donations to 501(c)(4) social-welfare groups.  Some politically-oriented 501(c)(4)s were recipients of very large donations during this last presidential election cycle, with some receiving and spending hundreds of millions of dollars.

“I saw really for the first time how funding directed in a very anonymous way can so significantly influence an election,” said Ms. Murkowski, who was re-elected as a write-in candidate in 2010 after losing her primary to a Tea Party-backed opponent. “While there is a fundamental constitutional freedom of speech to write that check, there is a discomfort without any transparency.”

Like I said, this one should be interesting.  Stay tuned!
